The Challenge

HRH used many independent systems to run the day-to-day operations of their organization.  Each of the systems is based on different technology and utilizes its own reporting solutions.  Within the IT organization specifically, decision makers rely on multiple systems to gauge the overall health of the operation including Help Desk, Call Center, and Infrastructure Management Systems.

HRH wanted to develop an operational scorecard to help to bridge the gap across the multiple “silos” of information. Additionally, they wanted the scorecard to seamlessly capture and track various pieces of information that are not currently stored within an automated system.

The Solution

The goal of this project was to assist HRH in driving towards the definition of a CIO scorecard as well as provide them with a pilot environment for the implementation of the Microsoft Business Scorecards Accelerator.

The solution included the implementation of the Business Scorecards Solutions Accelerator with integration to their existing Share Point Portal Server (SPS) Enterprise Architecture.  The Business Scorecards Solution Accelerator provides HRH with a robust scorecard interface that consolidates and aggregates their critical key performance indicators into an intuitive and accessible user interface.

In order to consolidate the source data required, a dimensional data mart and Analysis Services database were developed.  An automated and scheduled extraction transformation and loading (ETL) process was developed using Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) to load data that is stored within transactional database systems.  In order to capture the metric data which is not stored in an underlying database repository, we created a library of Microsoft Office InfoPath forms which allow end users and IT management to enter metric data in an electronic form that automatically aggregates that data into the data mart.  The InfoPath forms are accessible via a Sharepoint Portal Server forms library which is integrated into the CIO Scorecard portal.

The Results

  • A well developed user interface for viewing data, and trend analysis that is tightly integrated into the existing architecture
  • A simple to use solution that allows for structured reporting as well as ad-hoc data analysis
  • Knowledge transfer and guidance that allows the Business Scorecards to be extended over time by HRH for other business units
