The Challenge

Our client formed a partnership with Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield (EBCBS) to develop, market and sell a CDHP program to Empire's existing and prospective client base. This initiative required gathering requirements, architecting and building dedicated environments, designing applications, testing, implementing and integrating systems between five different business partners.  Ironworks began managing the project in June of 2004 and was challenged with having all systems, environments and applications integrated and issues resolved for a 1/1/2005 "go live" date.

The Solution

Our client selected Microsoft Biztalk Server 2004 to handle the integration process between all parties: Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, Caremark, Eckerd and Mellon.  Ironworks designed and implemented Biztalk processes to handle receipt and delivery of data feeds to and from these partners. These data feeds include:  group maintenance, member enrollment, medical and pharmacy claims processing, incentives and data reporting. Ironworks created Biztalk pipelines and orchestrations that were used to archive, decrypt, validate, transform and store this data into a SQL Server Database.  With this data, Biztalk was also used to create outgoing, flat file extracts, encrypt them and then transport them to the respective vendors.

Ironworks was also tasked with managing and leading the implementation and integration of all project tracks on our client's behalf. This included coordinating meetings and discussions with over 100 active project participants among the multiple parties, mitigating risks and issues through detailed issue tracking, budget and status reporting, creating and maintaining multiple project plans and effective resource management. In addition, Ironworks gathered and documented business and system requirements, as well as created and executed the functional, integration and volume test scenarios and test plans.  Through a collaborative effort, the client and Ironworks led Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield to a successful launch of their CDHP program on 1/1/2005.

The Results

Among the many benefits our client realized were:
  • The project was completed on time and Empire was profitable from the outset of the project
  • New issue tracking and code deployment processes
